Reviews
The Lenovo ThinkPad T460 is the greatest laptop for getting work done, even though there are several business laptops available. This 14-inch productivity powerhouse, which starts at INR 66,160 (INR 1,11,260 as tested), offers incredible battery life along with a comfortable keyboard, a precise touchpad, a sturdy chassis, and potent performance.
Design And Durability
The ThinkPad T460 is not the thinnest or lightest 14-inch business laptop at 13.4 x 9.2 x 0.83 inches, nor is it the heaviest at 3.8 pounds (4.2 with high-capacity battery). However, it is small enough to be carried around or held in your lap. The Lenovo laptop uses its size to accommodate a removable battery, giving it a significant advantage over rivals, especially if you choose the 6-cell unit.
The ThinkPad T460s, the laptop's slimmer brother, weighs 3 pounds and is only 0.74 inches thick. It does, however, have a sealed-in battery with below-average longevity. While HP's EliteBook 745 G3 (13.3 x 9.3 x 0.74 inches, 3.4 pounds) is somewhat slimmer and lighter than the T460, the Dell Latitude E5470 (13.2 x 9.1 x.9 inches, 3.88 pounds) and the Toshiba Tecra A40 (13.4 x 9.6 x 0.94 inches, 4 pounds) are both larger than the T460.
Like the majority of other business laptops from Lenovo, the ThinkPad T460 sports a straightforward yet elegant design. Only the red TrackPoint on the keyboard, the red status LEDs on the lid and deck, and the silver ThinkPad emblems are used to decorate the matte black chassis. The spill-resistant keyboard of the ThinkPad T460 offers a genuinely fantastic typing experience.
A few bumps won't kill Lenovo's laptop because of its glass-fiber-reinforced plastic casing. The T460 reportedly passed several MIL-SPEC 810G endurance tests, including those for extremely high and low temperatures, shocks, and vibrations.
Security
The ThinkPad T460 comes with a Trusted Platform Module and CPU variants that support Intel vPro, giving it the security and management capabilities that corporate IT departments want. It also has a fingerprint scanner as standard, however, this laptop employs an outdated swipe reader rather than the practical single-touch sensor seen on the ThinkPad T460s.
Keyboard, TrackPoint, And TouchPad
The spill-resistant keyboard of the ThinkPad T460 has smile-shaped keys with ample travel, making for an incredibly satisfying typing experience. The keys feature some of the deepest vertical travel we've ever seen on a laptop, measuring 2.33 millimeters (1.5 to 2 mm is typical). It doesn't feel as snappy as most other ThinkPads, which require 55 to 60 grams of force to actuate (or press down), because the keyboard only needs 50 grams.
Nevertheless, I never felt like "bottoming out" or pressing firmly against the base when I was typing. On the 10FastFingers.com typing test, I achieved a higher-than-average speed of 97 words per minute with a nearly error-free performance. The T460 has a TrackPoint pointing stick between its G and H keys, just like the majority of ThinkPads. As usual, the tiny red nub offered incredibly precise navigation. I never had to take my hands off the home row, no matter if I was using Windows or highlighting text.
You will like the superb, 2.9 x 3.9-inch touchpad of the ThinkPad T460 if you don't want to use a pointing stick. During my testing, I found that the navigation device was quick and smooth, without any of the jumpiness or stickiness we occasionally experience on buttonless pads. Additionally, it responded fast and reliably to multitouch motions including three-finger swipes, two-finger scrolling, and pinch to zoom.
Display
The 14-inch, 1920 x 1080 touch screen of the ThinkPad T460 produces clear visuals and somewhat accurate, albeit not particularly vibrant, color. The finer elements, such as the furrows on Steve Roger's forehead and the ridges on his helmet, truly popped out in the Captain America: Civil War trailer. Both the red and the blue in Iron Man's armor were somewhat dark and subdued but not washed out. When viewed more than 45 degrees to the left or right, images started to fade a little.
The T460's touch screen is matte rather than glossy, which reduces some glare, in contrast to most touch screens. Lenovo employs "in-cell touch" technology to this end, which does away with the need for a separate protective layer by integrating the touch screen digitizer right into the LCD panel.
Our colorimeter shows that the ThinkPad T460 only reproduces 67 percent of the sRGB color spectrum with touch and non-touch displays, which is similar to the T460s' reproduction rate of 66 percent but much less than the category average (84 percent). The Latitude E5470 (113.1%) and the HP EliteBook 745 G3 are both ahead of the T460 (84.1 percent). The laptop's Delta-E error rate is just 0.45, though (0 is perfect), indicating that the colors displayed on the screen are accurate.
The maximum brightness of the ThinkPad T460's display is 239 nits with a touch screen and 242 nits without, which is roughly on par with the category average (242) and the ThinkPad T460s. The EliteBook 745 G3 (317) and Latitude E5470 (278) were both brighter, though.
Audio
The T460's bottom-front speakers are adequate for conferences and watching movies, but we wouldn't suggest using them to listen to music. The output was loud enough to fill two adjacent rooms when I played Chic's bass-heavy "Everybody Dance" and AC/guitar-driven DC's "Back in Black," but the drums and vocals sound tinny. Nevertheless, I could clearly distinguish a division of sound with various instruments coming from various sides of the system.
You may adjust the equalization or utilize presets that are tailored for music, movies, games, or voice calls using the Dolby Audio program that comes preinstalled. The output is automatically adjusted based on content in the Dynamic setting, which I found to be the best.
Ports And Webcam
The ThinkPad T460 is equipped with every port that the majority of people would require in 2016, however it is not USB Type-C compatible, which would make it future-proof. A 3.5mm jack, an SD card reader, a SIM card slot (for optional 4G), a USB 3 connector, Ethernet, HDMI out, and a Kensington lock slot are all located on the right side. A small DisplayPort, an optional SmartCard reader, and two more USB ports, for a total of three, are located on the left side. Even in the dark corners of my workplace and kitchen, the 720p camera captured vivid, vibrant photos of my face.
Performance
Our test configuration of the ThinkPad T460 proved more than capable of hard multitasking and serious productivity work thanks to its Intel Core i5-6300U CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD. The machine had no latency, not even when I had 12 Chrome tabs open and a 1080p offline film playing in another window.
The ThinkPad T460 achieved a respectable 6,708 on Geekbench 3, a simulated performance test. That puts it comfortably above the 14-inch laptop average, the Core i5-6200U-powered Toshiba Tecra A40 (5,846), and the AMD Pro A8-powered HP EliteBook 745 G3 (5,494). (6,271). The Dell Latitude E5470 with its quad-core Intel Core i5-6440HQ CPU received a significantly higher score than the Core i5-6300U-equipped ThinkPad T460s (6,796). (9,760).
The Lenovo laptop finished our spreadsheet macro test, which matches 20,000 names with their addresses in OpenOffice Calc, in just 4 minutes and 13 seconds. The ThinkPad T460 completed the task in much less time than the category average (5:54), Toshiba Tecra A40 (4:30), and roughly equal to the ThinkPad T460s. Just a little bit quicker was the Latitude E5470. The ThinkPad T460 lasted 13 hours and 12 minutes thanks to the larger battery inside.
The ThinkPad T460 completed the Laptop File Transfer Test, which entails transferring 4.97GB of mixed media files, in only 29 seconds thanks to its quick 256GB SSD. With a rate of 175.5 MBps, the ThinkPad T460s, EliteBook 745 G3, and Latitude E5470 all outperform the category average of 115.1.
The ThinkPad T460's built-in Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU is adequate for playing casual games and watching HD video, but don't expect to play demanding games or perform advanced 3D modeling on it. The T460 scored a good 65,981 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a simulated test that gauges graphics power, which is much higher than the category average (55,432). The Tecra A40 and EliteBook 745 G3 underperformed by a significant amount, while the ThinkPad T460s performed somewhat better. The robust Latitude E5470 received a substantially higher rating.
Heat
During our tests, the ThinkPad T460 remained largely cool. The laptop's touchpad and keyboard registered imperceptible temperatures of 82 and 84 degrees Fahrenheit after streaming a video for 15 minutes, which is well below our comfort threshold of 95 degrees. With a temperature of 95 degrees, the bottom was a little warmer.
Battery Life
The ThinkPad T460 has Lenovo's incredibly useful PowerBridge technology, which combines an internal 3-cell battery with a removable 3- or 6-cell unit, unlike the slimmer T460s. You may replace the external battery without shutting down the computer since it discharges first. The laptop is available with low, medium, or high battery capacities, and the cost difference between a small and large battery is only INR 1225.
You need the high-capacity, 6-cell (72-watt hour) battery, we promise. On the Laptop Mag Battery test, which involves continuous Web browsing over Wi-Fi at 100 nits of brightness, the ThinkPad T460 performed admirably with the bigger unit inside, lasting a solid 17 hours and 4 minutes. The time was reduced to a still-impressive 13 hours and 12 minutes while using a touch screen. However, the T460 only lasted for 8:26 (non-touch) and 6:40 on the 3-cell battery (touch).
The T460's 6-cell battery runtime is significantly longer than the average for thin-and-light laptops. Additionally, it outperforms the HP EliteBook 745 G3, the Toshiba Tecra A40, and the Dell Latitude E5470 (7:16), among others. Only 7 hours and 21 minutes were made possible by the ThinkPad T460s and its sealed-in battery.
Configuration Options
If you purchase the T460 from Lenovo.com, you may customize it by choosing important features like the display, CPU, RAM, storage drive, and battery. A PCIe SSD, which is three times quicker than a standard SATA-based SSD, is sadly not an option. This is possible with the ThinkPad T460s. The screen resolution is also limited to 1920 x 1080, unlike the lighter ThinkPad, which allows for greater resolutions.
The 1366 x 768 non-touch display, Intel Core i3-6100U CPU, 4GB of RAM, and 500GB hard drive are included in the INR 66,800 basic model. A 1920 x 1080 touch screen, a Core i5-6300U processor, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, and a 6-cell battery were included in our INR 1,11,260 evaluation setup.
We advise configuring the T460 with its 6-cell, 72-watt-hour battery as it offers twice the endurance and is only INR 860 more expensive than the 3-cell unit that comes standard. We also suggest purchasing this ThinkPad with the 1920 x 1080 non-touch screen, which costs only INR 4000 more than the 1366 x 768 panel by default, unless you truly require touch.
Software And Warranty
A little amount of bloatware and a few helpful tools are included on the ThinkPad T460. Lenovo Companion performs hardware inspections and checks for system updates while Lenovo Settings allows you to customize the power, speaker, camera, display, and touchpad controls. The laptop also has tiles for Flipboard, Candy Crush Soda Saga, and Photoshop Express' Windows Store page.
The ThinkPad T460 is supported by a typical, one-year depot warranty from Lenovo, under which the manufacturer will cover the cost of returning any damaged goods. Additionally, you may spend an additional INR 3000 to INR 47,290 to purchase a five-year warranty extension, on-site servicing, or accidental damage insurance.
Final Words
The ThinkPad T460 is a business tool that will let you fly, much like a pair of Air Jordans on an NBA star. The laptop's deep key travel and extended endurance make it simple to type quickly and precisely, and you can work for hours without having to worry about running out of battery. If you don't spend much time away from a power source and want a little higher-res screen or a quicker PCIe SSD, take into account the 3-pound ThinkPad T460s. However, the ThinkPad T460 should be at the top of your purchase list if you want the greatest mainstream business laptop currently available. Just be sure to purchase the larger battery.
